Ginebra raps ROS in winning conference debut

Barangay Ginebra held off undermanned Rain or Shine, 116-108 to got its title bid off to a good start in the 2022-23 PBA Governors' Cup Sunday evening at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.Justin Brownlee led Ginebra's winning debut for the season-ending conference as he finished with 29 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a big triple-double effort, just over two weeks after guiding the Gin Kings to the Commissioner's Cup crown.Pesky guard Nard Pinto also came up big after contributing 12 points, which included two big three-pointers to help turn the tide against ROS."We're trying to shorten the minutes of everybody but then Nards came out with energy and started shooting," said Ginebra coach Tim Cone after the game.Brownlee also recognized the Elasto Painters' effort, as they fought tooth and nail against the Gin Kings despite playing without injured guards Andrei Caracut and Mike Nieto."Credit goes to Rain or Shine, they really came out and played tough and aggressive. But we got some rhythm and we got some stuff," said Brownlee, who is gunning for a fifth Governors' Cup title since first playing for Ginebra in the 2016 season.Big man Japeth Aguilar fired 18 points, while reigning league MVP Scottie Thompson added 15, eight boards and five assists.Fil-American wingman Jamie Malonzo and Stanley Pringle scored 14 points each in a balanced scoring attack for Ginebra.Michael Qualls led Rain or Shone with 23 points, but shot just seven-of-21 from the floor. Beau Belga had 21, guard Rey Nambatac chipped in 18 while James Yap had 11 forRain or Shine, which remained winless in four starts.
